Lavender, Spike Essential Oil 10ml
Lavandula latifolia, known as broadleaved lavender, spike lavender or Portuguese lavender, is a flowering plant in the family Lamiaceae, native to the western Mediterranean region, from central Portugal to northern Italy (Liguria) through Spain and southern France. The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the bud and flowers tops. It is more stimulating than true lavender and its higher level of oxides make it more effective in treating respiratory problems.
Fresh, floral, camphor-like.
A versatile and popular essential oil. Lavender has a calming fragrance and is particularly renowned for its ability to relax and promote restful sleep. Ideal to use in skin products for its soothing and conditioning effect on the skin. Its antiseptic properties make it perfect to add in shallow bath to keep wounds, ulcers and sores clean.
Spike lavender essential oil has been used to treat various ailments since ancient times. In the middle ages, spike oil was very expensive and only came in small quantities. Artists used to use this oil in place of turpentine, and it was used by many well-known painters such as the Van Eycks. Cultivation of the plant didn’t begin until around 1925, although it was not as popular as other species of lavender. Around 1950, the distillation of the plant dwindled and artists went back to using the more economical turpentine.
