Manuka is a shrubby tree native New Zealand and Southeast Austrialia. The dark pink or white flowers of the plant attract the bee's but it's the understated leaves that produce the aromatic essential oil. The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves and twigs. Manuka essential oil has traditionally played a role in preventing bacterial infections and for its relaxing nature.

Manuka is strongly antiseptic making it powerful for speeding healing of cuts, abrasions, spots and boils. It contains a natural antihistamine that can bring welcome relief to hay fever suffers, insect bites and stings. Its antiviral and bactericidal properties make it a useful oil for respiratory tract infections such as cold, catarrh and sinusitis, making it good to use to vaporise or add to the bath as a preventative in the winter months. Enhances wellbeing if you suffer from anxiety or feelings of anger, use of the oil will help ground yourself and promote calm and relaxation.
The history of Manuka oil begins when Captain Cook sailed into Mercury Bay in 1769, his crew sick with scurvy and infection, he came ashore for fresh water and supplies. He was greeted by the local Maori people of New Zealand, who offered him a medicinal decoction of boiled Manuka leaves known for its special healing powers oil. The Manuka tree (Leptospermum Scoparium) had long been treasured by the Maori people, who used the bark and leaves to treat colds, dysentery, fever, and numerous other skin ailments.
